Katherine here, there are 5 good habits all kidney disease patients should adopt to keep their blood pressure low and protect their kidneys!
Remember that High blood pressure is the worst enemy of your kidneys.
Up to 90% of CKD patients have high blood pressure, and many of them don’t have it under control.
+
+
That’s worrisome. High blood pressure is both a cause and effect of CKD.
It damages the kidneys faster than anything else in the world.
It also erodes sight, interferes with memory, puts a damper on sexual activity and steals years of life.
+
High blood pressure means heart problems, the number 1 cause of death in the world.
+
Guys, there are ways to STOP all of this.
Today we are going to see what foods can help – yes , if you eat more of these foods you’re actually gonna lower your blood pressure – and there are also remedies and good habits!
Our number 1 in particular is a vitamin that has many many benefits! It can even help keep your blood pressure under control: absolutely don’t miss it!
And guys, today I also need to show you a dangerous blood pressure medication that could be hiding in your medicine cabinet.
Not many people know about this, so,
+
are you taking the wrong pill for high blood pressure?
+
And before that, the first entry in this top 5 is a smoothie with incredible health benefits.
If you drink it for just a few days, you may benefit from its amazing blood pressure lowering, anti-inflammatory and immune promoting properties.
Number 5 is
5) the blood pressure lowering smoothie!
This one is going to give a serious boost to your kidney health.
It’s made with some of the most powerful medicinal superfoods you can find and it has so many benefits!
+
Let’s see how to make it!
-Very first ingredient is garlic!
Ok, you can’t believe garlic can taste good in a smoothie, but before knocking it, you have to try it!
I’m using garlic because it can lower blood pressure more effectively than prescription drugs.
+
But you need to prepare it like this, to get this benefit.
+
Use fresh garlic and chop it about 5 minutes before starting to prepare the smoothie.
Just put it into the blender while you:
-Cut and peel a one-inch piece of fresh ginger root, a really amazing superfood, and add it to the blender.
And also, let’s add
-1 and half tbsp of flaxseed
This is another miraculous superfood.
According to studies, flaxseed can actually improve kidney function in people with nephritis and kidney disease.
Yes, I told you this recipe was gonna be super healthy!
Now let’s add some color.
- frozen berries!
Frozen berries are inexpensive and just as healthy as fresh berries.
Here I have
Blueberries, they have the most powerful antioxidants in the world.
Consumption of these berries has been linked to lowered blood pressure in hypertensive people by a recent study!
Amazing!
But also, blackberries rich in plant compounds that can lower cholesterol and red currants.
these can decrease cortisol production, a known risk factor of kidney disease.
Let’s add about one cup, or 120grams to our smoothie.
+
And also, Cherry Bell radishes.
This is a powerful kidney detoxing veggie. Cherry radishes are known for their diuretic properties, great to lower blood pressure.
We are going to use around 100 grams or a little bit less than one cup of radishes.
+
Now, let’s just add a little bit of almond milk or even water, some ice cubes and blend on high for 2-3 minutes…
And our smoothie is ready! I find that sometimes garlic in smoothies may make them smell a bit… garlicky, but I promise you that the taste is gonna be great!
This recipe is for 2 people, but you can keep it in the fridge for up to 2 days.
And if you turn this smoothie into a healthy daily habit, your kidneys and your heart are going to be very grateful!
Guys, I have 4 even more powerful good habits you can embark on today that will help you repair your kidneys!
Starting with the kidney health tips of the day!
Number 4, easy tips to fight high blood pressure!
Lowering your blood pressure NATURALLY means being able to take less medications.
This is a key step toward repairing your kidneys, because all medications come with side effects, and some of them are dangerous.
More about this in the next part of the video,
Now there are 5 tips that can help you reduce your need for blood pressure medications!
1 reduce salt intake.
The consumption of salt raises blood pressure. Avoid packaged foods and junk foods – that’s where 80% of the salt people consume every day comes from.
And, do you know that there’s a type of table salt that’s actually supposed to help kidney health?
Do you want to know more? Watch my video about it!
And also,
- reduce sugar intake
Sugar is the most inflammatory food out here, the worst enemy of our kidneys.
Cutting sugar intake can result in an 8 over 4 mmHg drop in blood pressure, according to research!
And don’t forget to
3 laugh more!
Stress is a principal contributor to high blood pressure and laughter is an excellent antidote for stress.
Rewatch your favorite sitcom when you have some free time!
Even better:
4, eat foods rich in magnesium!
Higher magnesium intake is associated with lower blood pressure!
+
Here comes a most unexpected tip:
5 avoid using mouthwash.
There are new studies claiming that the antiseptic compound found in mouthwash destroys “friendly” oral bacteria that help produce nitric oxide from dietary nitrates.
This is why some researchers think mouthwash may do more harm than good.
+
What about dietary nitrates?
Dietary nitrates are crucial to keep blood pressure under control.
The foods highest in nitrate include beet roots and leafy greens such kale, arugula, chard, and spinach.
These are some of the healthiest foods for the kidneys, and part of the reason why they’re so healthy is nitric oxide.
Nitric oxide is a powerful neurotransmitter that helps blood vessels relax and also improves circulation in the kidneys.
It has been proven in many studies to act as a vasodilator, opening and unblocking your blood vessels and lowering blood pressure.
+
Now you may ask, if dietary nitrates are so healthy, why don’t we just supplement them?
This brings us to our number 3!
Number 3 nitric oxide supplements
Nitric oxide is incredibly important for kidney and heart health, as we have seen.
Nitric oxide protects against cardiovascular disease
It lowers blood pressure.
It improves blood flow.
+
But according to a study, the overall production of nitric oxide is decreased in people with chronic kidney disease.
This won’t just contribute to the risk for cardiovascular events – it can directly cause kidney damage.
+
Good news is, you can easily get more nitric oxide though supplementation.
One of the most effective supplements is L-Arginine.
As a natural dietary supplement, arginine has gained particular attention for its possible heart benefits.
In the body, the amino acid arginine changes into nitric oxide.
The most recent research suggests that L-arginine may lower blood pressure significantly, improve cholesterol and improve overall blood vessel health.
+
Arginine is so good at improving blood flow that it can even help sexual function in those with erectile disfunction.
+
Recent research also linked increased arginine supplementation to improved GFR, or kidney function.
It seems to also improve the symptoms of kidney inflammation.
+
This is really amazing and confirms what researchers believed about the health benefits of this supplement.
Arginine was tested in doses ranging from 1 to 24 grams a day, and a good therapeutic dosage for high blood pressure is 1 gram twice daily.
Obviously consult your doctor before taking it, even if this supplement in pretty safe.
And cheap, I would add, as it can be found for around 30$ for a 2-pound bag.
Also consider that, when it comes to heart health, L-arginine may work better when combined with other vitamins, such as vitamins B6 and B12.
These two vitamins are usually recommended to all those suffering from kidney disease.
And there’s a good reason for that – seriously, if you are not supplementing vitamin B6 and B12, watch my video up here now!
Or, even better, save it for later!
It’s time now to take a look at dangerous blood pressure medication that could be hiding in your medicine cabinet.
Number 2,
Be careful with this blood pressure medication!
Fact, taking Beta blockers as a first line medication against blood pressure in kidney disease is a very poor choice.
I keep seeing people get prescribed Beta blockers by their doctors and this really makes me worried.
+
If you take a blood pressure lowering medication, get your doctor to prescribe you angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), instead.
There’s solid medical science proving that beta blockers are not good as first-line treatment for high blood pressure as they have more side effects and less benefits than other high blood pressure medications.
Because while all blood pressure medications… well… work to lower blood pressure, ARBs including losartan, telmisartan and more are the BEST medications when it comes to protecting the kidneys.
These blood pressure medications can fight proteinuria, a cause of kidney damage, much better than beta blockers for example.
And even if you don’t have proteinuria, ARBs are known to have better kidney protecting properties than other medications.
Obviously, this is true for those taking just one medication for blood pressure.
If you are taking more than one, still be sure that you are also taking ARBs.
So be careful with what medication you are taking.
Many patients take the wrong pill even for decades before they find out by themselves.
By the way, ACE inhibitors are effective too, but they often have worse side effects than ARBs.
Main side effect here is hyperkalemia, or too high potassium levels.
I’ve talked more in dept about this in my recent video, it’s up here if you want to know more.
+
Time for our number 1 now! Getting your levels for this vitamin in the correct range has not just been proven to lower blood pressure, it can improve kidney function altogether!
This is why they call it the kidney vitamin!
Number 1 is…
1) Vitamin d
Vitamin d is our number 1 today because keeping levels of this vitamin in the correct range through supplementation has been proven time and time again to be one of best things someone with kidney disease can do to improve their kidney function.
And there’s more!
A recent study concluded that supplementing vitamin D can significantly lower blood pressure in people that are either 50 years old, obese or in those with vitamin D deficiency.
+
Now, even if you are younger than 50 and you have an healthy body weight, consider that
up to 90% of people with kidney problems have low levels of this vitamin.
+
Yes, supplementing vitamin d every day can lower your blood pressure levels fast and it can help your kidneys in a multitude of ways.
Now, there’s only one problem with vitamin D.
Too many people are not informed about it and taking it all wrong, causing more harm than good!
And this is very dangerous because in those with kidney problems taking vitamin D the wrong way has been associated with arterial calcification!
Do you want to know how to correctly supplement vitamin D without taking this risk?
In my recent video up here, I’ve explained all you need to know about the kidney vitamin!
Watch it now if you have missed it!
And this is all for today, thank you for watching!
