Katherine from 00kidney here, welcome to our journey together to a better kidney health.
In today’s video, the 4 steps to completely stop kidney disease progression.
With the right diet, the progressive decline in renal function associated with kidney disease can be completely stopped – according to a big review of studies.
And I know that what I’m going to show you today is the best treatment for kidney disease because I’ve been working with people suffering from kidney disease for 8 years now and I’ve talked to patients and doctors from all over the world in these years.
And it’s very unfortunate to know that patients from the US almost always have a worse outcome than those from Europe.
One could think that the reason is some ancient curse – maybe because the United States are built on …Indian burial ground…!
but not, it’s not that.
And it’s not even your fault.
Actually, it’s a treatment that’s used in Europe but not in the US.
In fact, kidney disease patients from the US or the Philippines or from India all have the same outcome.
On the other hand, I’ve met people from Italy who have been in stage 4 kidney disease for 20 years without significant deterioration of their kidney function.
Which is impressive, I mean, kidney function is supposed to deteriorate with age, alright? even in healthy people.
Having the same kidney function for 20 years means that something good is being done.
The reason is the diet.
There’s a special diet called VLPD that’s preventing thousands of kidney patients – mainly from Europe – from losing their kidneys.
Question,
DOES THE VLPD REALLY STOP STAGE 4 KIDNEY DISEASE?
Now guys, I know it’s hard to believe that there’s a cure.
Especially when your doctor may have told you that the only thing you can do is to wait till you get in stage 5 so you can start dialysis.
But it’s true. This is a proven way to completely stop the progression of kidney disease.
Yes, you can actually eat your way out of kidney disease. I can prove it to you.
A large review of studies, conducted on 2996 people concluded that, “the very low protein diet reduce the number of people with CKD stage 4 or 5, who progress to end stage kidney disease.”
So, on almost 3000 people, those following the VLPD had less chance of having to undergo dialysis
And, in a more recent study, patients following the VLPD plus a special supplementation of Ketoanalogues had no decline in kidney function for a year.
So if you live in Europe, well, congratulations.
You can probably stop watching this video and just follow your doctor’s orders – unless you want to learn more about the diet and supplementation needed to make a VLPD work – which we are going to do in today’s video.
But if you are from the US, from the Philippines or from India, don’t worry.
There are just 4 steps you should take to STOP the progression of CKD – even in stage 4.
And guys, if you are still not sure about this, if you feel like the studies I have shown you today are not enough to prove that this diet stops kidney disease, feel free to write a comment.
We can talk about this in comment section, you know that I always try to answer all your comments.
Now guys, Let’s see HOW the VLPD it works!
Here are the 4 steps
So number 1, avoid protein.
The very low protein diet works based on the notion that the kidneys are damaged by protein – more accurately by nitrogen, a byproduct of protein metabolism.
You may have already heard about nitrogen because one of the most important indicator of kidney function is called BUN – or blood urea nitrogen.
To put it simple, the less nitrogen in the blood, the healthier the kidneys are.
We are clear that the less protein you eat, the better chance you are going to have to reverse kidney disease.
So, let’s see what foods contain protein and how to avoid them.
To do this, the first step is understanding where dietary protein come from.
Foods rich in protein include
Fish and seafood, including canned and fresh fish.
Poultry, such as chicken and turkey are very rich in protein.
Red meats, such as beef, veal, lamb, pork.
Eggs.
Processed meats, sausages, ham, bacon, and corned beef. Ok, processed meats are something you should be avoiding even if you’re not on a diet.
Now, some nuts and seeds can still be had in very small amounts, but these other protein sources are better avoided completely.
Now guys I know this is very hard to do.
Completely avoiding protein in the diet is a tough obstacle to overcome.
But if the pay-off here is completely stopping kidney disease – avoiding the risk of kidney failure and dialysis for the rest of your life – would you do it?
So, we have 2 very big components in this special diet that stops kidney disease even in stage 4 patients.
The diet is the first step, very important.
What’s more important is
SECOND STEP, the supplementation.
Supplementing with Ketoanalogues is key to get the benefit of a low protein diet (stopping kidney disease) while avoiding its most dangerous side effect.
Malnutrition.
Malnutrition is especially common in older people and in those in the advanced stages of kidney disease.
It’s a cause of infections, inflammation and… well, death.
The reason is that, while your kidneys ate protein, the rest of your body is… well, completely made from protein.
The skin, muscles, organs… it’s all made from protein.
So your body cannot live without protein but dietary protein contains nitrogen, which damages the kidneys.
The answer is Ketoanalogues.
Ketoanalogues are supplements of amino acids – the building block of the human body – without dangerous nitrogen.
There are several studies that have determined the benefits of including this supplement for those with kidney disease.
Some of the potential benefits are:
Slow GFR decline
Decrease serum creatinine and BUN levels
Lower oxidative stress
Decrease metabolic acidosis
Decrease insulin resistance
Improved blood pressure
Delayed start of dialysis
This is why today the VLPD + ketoanalogues treatment is recommended both to diabetic and non-diabetic kidney disease patients.
It’s important to know that most of these results are based on studies of those with stages 4 and 5 kidney disease.
Now guys, there are 3 brands of ketoanalogues available today.
Ketosteril, a calcium-based ketoanalogue. It was created from Fresenius, a well-known dialysis company and requires a prescription to be sold.
Then there’s Albutrix, a magnesium-based ketoanalogue product that comes in tablet form and it’s sold in 3 specific formats, one for stage 3, one for stage 4 and one for stage 5 CKD.
Ketorena, a calcium-based ketoanalogue sold in both powder and tablet form.
Ketorena is made in the US and doesn’t require a prescription.
It’s the cheapest of the bunch but it’s recommended to choose the different ketoanalogue based on calcium levels of your most recent blood test.
More about this in the last and most important part of the video.
Now, the next step here is putting all this together.
Step 3, be prepared to face some dietary changes
Many of you guys probably are already following a low protein diet.
If you are following a vegan, vegetarian or plant-based diet, that’s already a low protein diet.
It can still help with kidney disease. Plant based and vegan diets are proven to help.
But they’re very different from a VERY low protein diet.
Here’s why
Patients following a Plant-based or vegetarian diet usually eat up to 40 grams of protein per day.
This means that they can actually have a portion of some high protein food even once per day.
On the other hand, VLPD diets are around 20 grams of protein/day.
That’s very little protein.
And, while numbers are personalized, having to eat just 20 grams of protein per day means no steak, no eggs, no meat and no fish.
And this makes the VLPD a very restrictive dietary regimen.
Now, this is a sample of what someone on a VLPD will eat in a day.
OK, CLEARLY, There is pretty much no protein in these meals.
Yes, I know… Switching to a very low protein regimen is not as simple as just cutting out grilled chicken or Friday night steak.
But it is completely doable!
Now, there’s one more step, maybe the most important, to get from eating almost just salad every day plus ketoanalogues to completely stopping kidney disease.
FOURTH STEP,
Find the right doctor.
A very low protein diet is not something you can self-prescribe: it requires very precise calculations.
Now, I know what you’re thinking, “If the very low protein diet is proven to work, how come my nephrologist never mentioned it to me?”
Well, unless you live in Europe, be prepared to face some problems when talking to your doctor about the VLPD.
There’s only one therapy, doctors in the US are comfortable with, when it comes to dealing with kidney disease.
Dialysis.
But this doesn’t mean you are going to be comfortable with it. Or your kidneys.
So you will have to put your health above the comfort of your doctor here.
Many doctors in the US, still today, tell patients not to worry when their gfr is… you know, around 60.
Just wait. No treatments are prescribed, no diet no nothing.
What many doctors tell their patients is to just wait for their kidney health to deteriorate until their kidneys are not working at all.
So all therapy is delayed until the GFR of the patient is much lower, let’s say around 15, or stage 5. And then start the dialysis.
Ok, if you have been following me here you may already know what I think about this approach.
With all the due respects to all the doctors and nephrologists out there,
telling people to just WAIT FOR THEIR KIDNEYS TO DIE MEANS … KILLING THEM.
Sorry if I’m very blunt here but if there’s a working alternative, a way to stop or at least greatly slow down the progression of kidney disease… well, I’m all for it.
You, as a kidney disease patient should, in my opinion, do all you can to protect the health of your kidneys.
And if anyone tells you otherwise, they just don’t have your health as their priority.
This is why finding the right doctor and dietitian to follow you in this process, is the most important step.
Guys, I know this is not easy, but it’s the most proven and most effective way of stopping the progression of kidney disease.
It works even in patients approaching dialysis. This means that it’s never too late to find the right doctor and start a diet that can save your kidneys.
And I know this is a complicated topic, so feel free to ask anything you want in comment section.
Ok guys, as usual, a new video is coming next Friday – I hope to see you there.
In the meantime, keep taking good care of your kidneys and be good to yourself.
This is all for today, thank you for watching!
2 1/2 years ago my egfr was 28 in the progress of a decline for about 10 years (that’s when I was referred to a nephrologist). I kept getting the just wait reply when I asked about diet changes. In May I changed to a mostly healthy vegan diet. Eliminated some fruits and vegetables that aren’t good for kidneys. Today I am at 51 egfr ( it has been a slow steady increase). I would recommend that people eliminate animal products. Not sure about a ketoanalog for me because of the stated negatives. I do take Vitamin D and B12. Am considering chitosan but am confused about brand to buy as some say cornsilk. Any advice
