There are few things that really work to reverse kidney disease and the alkaline diet definitely is one of them.
It works for everyone suffering from kidney disease because it effectively fights one of the biggest burdens from the kidneys – metabolic acidosis.
Unfortunately, many people follow a standard Western Diet that is high in acidic foods and very dangerous for the kidneys.
In the next 10 minutes, we’ll make sure this doesn’t describe you.
There are just 5 things that you need to do to turn your diet into an alkaline diet – or to make your alkaline diet work even better.
Number 5
Make these 4 kidney friendly superfoods regulars on your table:
There are many berries you can eat, depending on the season, but they all have 3 things in common.
All berries are very rich in vitamins and powerful antioxidants.
They’re very low in potassium
And they’re alkaline!
Well, the more I study the health benefits of berries, the more I’m convinced they’re God’s gift to people with kidney problems!
Blueberries have the most powerful antioxidants in the world.
Red currants decrease cortisol production, a known risk factor of kidney disease.
And blackberries can lower cholesterol, help fight off colds and gout and promote cardiovascular health.
Eat berries every day!
And also
We can almost say that Cabbage is a … low potassium version of kale – one of the healthiest foods on the planet!
In fact, it is part of the Brassica Oleracea family, which includes kale.
And while there are many varieties of cabbage, such as red, green, white and purple, they’re all incredibly alkaline!
Cabbage can also fight inflammation in the body and it’s especially rich in sulphur compounds, powerful kidney detoxifiers.
And also consider:
Bell pepper
Peppers really pack a lot of vitamins – especially vitamin C, vitamin B6 and folic acid.
Red bell peppers are good for you because they also contain lycopene, an antioxidant that protects organs from damage.
They are very low in potassium – just 88 mg per half cup serving – and also, very, very alkaline!
And if you want to snack, do it with
These delicious little gems are one of the best sources of vitamin C in nature – even better than citrus fruits.
The kiwifruit is available year-round and possesses properties that fight anemia, lower blood pressure and reduce bad cholesterol in the blood.
Many people think that they’re acid forming but kiwis are actually very alkaline
And this bring us to the next tip of this video
Number 4 don’t trust what your tongue says
Trust the “PRAL” score instead.
PRAL stands for Potential Renal Acid Load.
It is a measurement of the amount of acid your kidneys will have to remove after eating 100g of a certain food.
Higher PRAL values indicate more acid is produced from that food. Negative PRAL values indicate that the food is actually helping the kidneys removing acid.
Remember, the kidneys are the organ supposed to remove excess acidity from the blood – so, the foods in this list with a negative score are going to help the kidneys, while those with a positive score, are going to burden them more.
While it’s safe to consider almost all greens very alkaline, almost all fruits alkaline and meat and fish generally acidic, there are some surprises.
What this list tells us is that eating alkaline is not always intuitive. Many foods that taste acidic are, indeed, alkalizing.
Some very notable examples include lemons and kiwis, that taste acidic but are going to be very alkalizing for the kidneys.
Other counterintuitive foods include coffee, for example, that may taste acidic, but it won’t increase the acid load on the kidneys.
It will slightly decrease it, as we can see here.
Same for red wine. These are two healthy beverages, if consumed in moderation, by the way.
Other excellent examples of healthy foods which will make your body more alkaline include kale, arugula, parsley and many other greens.
On the other end of the scale, we find dairy. Milk, cheese may feel alkaline when you eat them, but they ARE not. More about this in a moment.
Now guys, in this pdf I’m showing you is a very complete list of foods with their pral score.
And you can download it for free right now so you can keep it on your phone or print it – link is in description.
And by the way, before we move on, let me know in comment section if you are already following the alkaline diet and what results is giving you or if you plan to try it!
Ok, here’s what you absolutely need to avoid if you want to protect your kidneys.
Tip Number 3
There are 4 categories of foods you should absolutely avoid in an alkaline diet.
Desserts and snacks, such as ice creams, candies, pastries and so on should always been avoided – especially by diabetics – but they’re unhealthy for everyone.
Added sugar causes inflammation, can make you gain weight and it’s addictive.
Also, these foods are acid forming.
Fried, High-fat foods and processed foods in general, are very acid forming too.
I want to make a point clear here. The type of processing matters when determining alkalinity.
Eating a food raw, dried, cooked, or boiled has the potential to change the chemical makeup of the food. Always prefer boiling and sauteing to deep frying, alright?
Another thing to avoid
Meat. Meat is one of the most acid forming foods on the menu. Also, it’s a source of protein, not healthy for people with kidney problems.
same for Dairy. Milk, cheese, Cream sauces, Full-fat dairy products are always to be avoided. Not only they’re acid forming, they also contain too much phosphorus for a kidney diet.
Ok, globally, these are all foods people with kidney problems should be avoiding already, so these exclusions shouldn’t give you too much troubles.
And, how to make your diet both taste better and more alkaline?
Number 2 Use spices,
Spices are almost always alkaline and, as a big plus, they can help you avoiding salt or sugar.
Not to mention that spices are full of health benefits.
Black pepper for example is full of antioxidants.
Hot pepper can work as a natural painkiller.
Thyme can boost your immunity.
Garlic can significantly lower your blood pressure.
Ginger is a powerful antioxidant and can ease nausea.
Turmeric is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatories in nature.
Rosemary can help boost the immune system and improve blood circulation.
Ok, I could go on forever.
And, you can’t really go wrong with spices – they’re also really alkaline forming.
And very often, they are even healthier and tastier when you mix them up.
Speaking of which, I’ve recently made a video about salt substitutes made from mixed spices that are incredibly healthy for people with kidney problems.
Mmm really tasty … but, unfortunately some salt substitutes come with a hidden danger.
So watch this video up here before trying a salt substitute.
But don’t miss our number 1 for today!
And the most effective tip to reverse kidney disease trough the alkaline diet is…
Number 1
KNOW the pH of your urine.
Yes, this can be an incredibly valuable tool in our arsenal to fight kidney disease.
How do you know if the diet you’re following is alkaline enough?
Easy, get some urinalysis strips and get tested at home.
Now, these strips are widely available on amazon, or eBay… even some pharmacies carry them!
They cost as low as 5$ for 10 strips and can reliably tell you what the pH of your urine is.
This can even help finding the right dosage for baking soda, maybe the most powerful home remedy for kidney disease.
Urinalysis strips are very, very easy to use – for more info on how these strips work and where to find them, you can watch this video up here.
So the idea here is to find a baseline and then use the alkaline diet to raise the urine pH number – with great benefit for your kidneys.
So, in conclusion, the alkaline, plant-based diet can be MIRACULOUSLY HEALTHY for people with kidney problems. It’s a true detox.
And, as we have seen, it can be easy to follow when you know more about the PRAL SCORE of foods.
Now, if you want to try a very powerful alkaline detox, made from celery and lemon, I have a very easy recipe for you guys.
It’s in this video up here.
And, as usual, a new video is coming next Tuesday, if you don’t want to miss it, subscribe and set the notification bell to all.
In the meantime, keep taking good care of your kidneys and be good to yourself.
This is all for today, thank you for watching!
